Popes Youth Jubilee

Vatican Aims to Attract the Young

In late July and early August 2025, the Vatican turned Rome into a vibrant global stage for youth. At the heart of the Holy Year of Hope (Jubilee 2025), Pope Leo XIV presided over a landmark “Jubilee of Youth”—a weeklong celebration offering a blend of liturgy, multimedia engagement, and community-building events designed to resonate with younger generations.

Beginning July 28, roughly half a million young pilgrims from more than 146 countries converged in Rome, with many gathering for the climax events at Tor Vergata field on August 2–3. Organizers anticipated up to 1 million attendees for the closing prayer vigil and Mass euronews+13Vatican News+13Straight Arrow News+13.

Guided by Archbishop Rino Fisichella’s vision, the Youth Jubilee emphasized open doors—literal and figurative. More than 370 churches, school buildings, gyms, and local homes welcomed young pilgrims, backed by a city-wide effort to provide food stations and meal distribution for participants from communities including war zones AP News+2Vatican News+2USCCB+2. From Christian rock concerts to confession booths, public Rosary sessions, and multimedia influencers meetups, the itinerary sought to merge ancient tradition with contemporary energies Straight Arrow News.

On August 2, Pope Leo XIV, the first U.S.-born pontiff, arrived at Tor Vergata by helicopter and greeted the crowd in an open-air popemobile tour as temperatures soared to nearly 30 °C (86 °F). Misting trucks and water cannons helped cool the young pilgrims during their evening vigil that doubled as an outdoor “slumber party” capped by Mass the following morning Vatican News+12Reuters+12CBS News+12.

In his multilingual address (Spanish, Italian, English), the Pope urged the youth to embrace radical choices: serving the poor, pursuing vocations, forming meaningful friendships, and seeking justice in everyday life. He emphasized that “friendship is a path to peace” and called them to be modern-day missionaries of hope and solidarity ABC News+2AP News+2AP News+2. The events evoked vivid parallels with World Youth Day—especially the iconic 2000 Rome edition. Yet, amid celebration, the Pope shared solemn moments—announcing the deaths of two young pilgrims and hospitalization of another—reminding
